كما تلاحظ، فإن الاسم العلمي للدواء هو (فلوكساتين) ويعرف تجارياً باسم ( بروزاك) والشركة الأم المنتجة له هي (شركة إيالي ليلي الأمريكية) وكما تلاحظ فإن الدواء قد أتى تحت مسميات تجارية أخرى، وذلك بعدما سمحت الشركة للشركات الأخرى بتصنيعه، بعد أن انتهت مدة براءة الاختراع والمعروفة بـ 10 سنوات.

البروزاك هو أفضل دواء عرفه التاريخ الطبي لعلاج الاكتئاب النفسي، وحين أُدخل السوق عام 1987م، كان هذا حدثاً علمياً فريداً، حيث اتضحت فعاليته وسلامته، وقلة آثاره الجانبية، وعدم تفاعله مع الأدوية الأخرى، كما أنه يمكن أن يؤخذ كجرعة واحدة، ولا يسبب أي نوع من الإدمان، وكل الآثار الجانبية التي يسببها هي ربما شعور بسيط بسوء الهضم في الأيام الأولى من تناوله، كما أنه يسبب لحوالي 10% من المتعالجين صداع بسيط، كما أنه ربما يؤثر سلباً على الرغبة الجنسية لدى 10%من الرجال.

بجانب فعاليته في علاج الاكتئاب النفسي، فقد أثبت أيضاً أنه علاج ممتاز لعلاج الوساوس القهرية، والقلق، والخوف، والرهاب.

الدواء يعمل عن طريق تنشيط مادة في المخ تعرف باسم ( سروتونين)، يُعتقد أنها من المسببات البيولوجية الكبرى للاكتئاب النفسي.

جرعة البروزاك في حالات الاكتئاب النفسي هي كبسولة إلى اثنتين في اليوم، وفي حالة القلق النفسي كبسولة واحدة في اليوم، أما في حالة الوساوس القهرية فالجرعة هي كبسولتين إلى ثلاث في اليوم.
